Night Routine

Food and Behavior at night

The entire period of 24 hours including day and night is called a day. Night routine is also a part of the routine. After doing all the work and hard work of the day, rest is necessary at night. Because sleep or the process of sleeping is most important at night, hence in the night routine, first of all we provide information about sleep.

The Power of Sleep Recharging Mind and Body Naturally

Everyone knows that proper sleep is necessary to keep the body healthy and energetic. After doing the whole day’s work, when the body and mind become tired and inactive and the sense organs and motor organs also get tired, then the person goes into a state of sleep. Thus that situation, when the mind loses its connection with the sense organs and motor organs and they become totally inactive, is called sleep or slumber During sleep, only important functions like breathing in, breathing out, blood circulation etc. continue to take place in the body, remaining functions stop. Due to this, very little energy of the body is expended; the remaining energy (power) increases strength etc. This is the reason why after sleeping a person feels healthy, fresh and full of enthusiasm. Night time is favorable for sleep, because at night the Kapha dosha of the body and the Tamas dosha of the mind help in inducing sleep. Both these doshas increase at night due to darkness, lack of noise and colder than during the day and hence it helps in getting good sleep. Before going to sleep at night, if there is a TV in your room, then turn it off properly and keep your phone and mobile outside the room if possible or away from the bed before going to sleep. As far as possible, everyone should sleep on separate beds, which is extremely essential for staying healthy. According to Ayurveda, one should sleep early in the night and wake up early in the morning because darkness prevails during the night and hence one gets good sleep. Waking up early in the morning leads to predominance of Vata and Kapha, and at that time the process of defecation also takes place properly. Therefore one should wake up early in the morning. The mind also remains happy with that. There is an increase in energy, freshness, joy and enthusiasm in the body. Get up in the morning and take a walk; the clean air and peaceful environment of this time is extremely important for the health of the body.

1.Dreaming But Not Resting: How a Busy Mind Affects Sleep Quality

In this, the person keeps dreaming while sleeping. The subconscious mind remains surrounded by thoughts and options. Thus this sleep is not deep and completely relaxing.

2.Why Deep Sleep Matters More Than Long Hours of Sleep

To get good sleep, apart from physical exertion and fatigue, it is also necessary to be completely mentally calm, that is, free from mental disorders like anger, fear, grief, worry etc. People who cannot sleep are considered to be suffering from ‘insomnia’ and suffer from many types of mental and physical disorders.

Causes of insomnia

  • Mental disorders, such as fear, anxiety, grief and anger.
  • Extreme pain throughout the body due to excessive physical exertion.
  • Rakta-mokshan means the process of removing blood from the body.
  • Extreme fasting.
  • Smoking
  • Uncomfortable bed and place.
  • Old age and some diseases, especially colic caused by Vata dosha.
  • Excessive amount of impurities is released from the head and body through vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Naturally getting less sleep.

Ways to overcome insomnia

  • Consuming oily foods, rice with curd or milk.
  • Consumption of onion.
  • Stay mentally happy.
  • Listening to music according to your interest
  • Using soothing ointments for the eyes, head and mouth.
  • Comfortable beds and quiet places to sleep.
  • Smelling natural perfumes and other scents and keeping beautiful flower bouquets etc. in the room. By loving celibacy (restraint), staying away from luxury (sensuality) and keeping a feeling of satisfaction, one does not suffer from insomnia-

The Hidden Risks of Daytime Sleep How It Disrupts Health and Doshas

Sleeping during the day increases the Kapha and Pitta doshas in the body, which can cause diseases. Therefore, sleeping during the day is harmful for health. Sleeping during the day can cause many diseases, such as halimak (a dangerous type of jaundice), headache, heaviness in the body, body pain, weakness of digestion, heart palpitations (feeling as if mucus is stuck on the heart), swelling, lack of appetite, vomiting or desire to vomit, swelling in the nose (rhinitis), half head ache, cold fever or rash, rashes or blisters, boils, itching, drowsiness (lethargy), cough, throat diseases, lack of intelligence and memory, obstruction in the body’s fluid, blood circulation etc. sources, fever, weakness in the sense organs and motor organs, more toxic effect of artificial poisons and other such diseases. Therefore, people with obese body, those who consume oily foods, those with Kapha nature suffering from Kapha diseases, those suffering from joint pain and those who are victims of artificial poison should not sleep at all during the day.

The Exceptions to Daytime Sleep When Napping Boosts Health and Longevity

In summer, the duration of nights decreases and due to heat, the water elements of the body get absorbed more and the Vata increases. Hence, in this season, all people are allowed to sleep during the day. Apart from this, sleeping during the day is not prohibited in some other conditions also, such as – when tired due to music, singing, studying, consumption of intoxicants, or excessive walking, when suffering from diseases like tuberculosis, fatigue, thirst, diarrhoea, colic, asthma, hiccups, in old age and childhood, when the body is weak, when injured due to fall or attack, while travelling in a vehicle, when awake at night, when tired due to anger, grief or fear, even after sleeping during the day the metals and energy remain balanced. The increased Kapha dosha during sleep also nourishes the body parts and leads to longevity.

The Digestive-Sleep Connection: How to Eat Right for Restful Nights

There is a deep relationship between food digestion and sleep. Keeping in mind the fact that if the food is not digested properly, it can cause disturbance in sleep, it is necessary to eat food as early as possible at night. There must be at least a gap of two hours between meal and bedtime. Apart from this, dinner should be easily digestible and light. After eating food one should also go for a short walk. This helps in proper digestion of food and helps in getting good sleep.

Why curd consumption is prohibited at night?

Generally, despite being beneficial for health, curd causes obstruction in the body’s sources. Due to this quality, eating curd at night is prohibited in Ayurveda, because one has to sleep some time after eating dinner. The process of food digestion continues while sleeping, which is very slow. In such a situation, there is a high possibility of blockage in the sources. As a result, sleep and metabolic activities are also disrupted. This is the reason why eating curd at night is generally prohibited for everyone. Patients suffering from asthma, cough, cold, joint pain are prohibited from eating curd during the day as well as at night, because these types of diseases are caused due to blockage in the sources.

Night Time Reading

To keep the eyes healthy, it is necessary that there is proper and adequate lighting arrangement while reading and writing, but it should be kept in mind that artificial light is not as beneficial as sunlight. Due to this the eyesight gradually deteriorates. Therefore, as far as possible, one should read less at night. Writing puts a lot of strain on the eyes, so it is better not to do writing work at night.

Sexual Intercourse

Keeping health and social norms in mind, Ayurveda has set some limits on sexual intercourse. On this basis, one should not have intercourse or sex under the following circumstances (these rules are the same for both men and women):-
  • Do not have sexual intercourse during the woman’s menstruation, if she is suffering from any disease or infection, or if she is impure.
  • Ugly, bad character, rude behavior and of low caste, with another woman and adulterous man.
  • When there is no friendly behavior, when there is no desire for sex, when one is attracted towards another man.
  • Under trees considered sacred, in public places, crossroads, gardens, cremation grounds, slaughter houses, water, hospitals, dispensaries, temples and the residence of a Brahmin, Guru or teacher.
  • In the twilight hours of morning and evening on the full moon, new moon, Pratipada (first day of the fortnight) and Ashtami tithi.
  • By not consuming any aphrodisiac product like milk etc.

Obesity is the main disease caused due to lack of proper lifestyle

Obesity – symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

According to Ayurveda, those people who have excess fat and flesh accumulated in their buttocks, stomach and chest and these body parts keep moving while walking, i.e. keep moving and who do not have the strength and enthusiasm as per the growth of their body, are considered to be extremely obese or very fat. In such persons, blockage occurs due to accumulation of fat in the body sources. Due to this feel breathless while walking. There is a feeling of heaviness in the body, and one gets nervous and restless quickly. Due to this, the Vata starts moving especially in the chamber and the digestive fire gets stimulated. Whatever the person eats, it gets digested very quickly and the hunger increases. In this way, disorders develop in the bile and wind in the form of digestive fire and fat starts increasing in the body. Due to this, many types of diseases arise due to wind.

Causes of Obesity

According to Ayurveda, the main causes of obesity are overeating, consumption of heavy, sweet, cold and greasy foods, lack of physical activity, sleeping during the day, being too happy, lack of mental strength and hereditary (family) influences. Due to all these reasons, fat increases in greater quantity in the body than other metals (juice, blood etc.). Due to the looseness, heaviness and tenderness of the fat, his movement and working capacity gets adversely affected. Due to decrease in quantity of sperm and blockage in sperm sources due to fat, there is problem in sexual intercourse. The working capacity of obese people becomes slow. Phlegm is mixed with fat and fat is liquid and heavy. The balance of metals gets disturbed. Hence, weakness occurs even if one has a fat body.

Treatment for Obesity

According to Ayurveda, Langhan or Apatarpan therapy should be done to remove obesity. Lean therapy is the therapy that brings lightness in the body and reduces weight by reducing fat in the body. On this basis, light, hot, non-sticky, dry, rough, subtle, liquid and hard medicinal substances are used for slimness. The following measures can be used for this type of treatment-
  • Correctional therapy – Removal of impurities and wastes accumulated in the body by vomiting, diarrhoea, basti (enema), nasya (insertion of medicine into the nose).
  • Sleep early in the night and wake up early in the morning.
  • Eat small and light meals and eat on time.
  • Control your thirst. Drink warm water when you feel thirsty.
  • Taking air and sunlight and walking in the morning and evening.
  • Consuming digestive medicines.
  • Do physical exercise, yoga, pranayam etc. daily.

Apart from slimming therapy, the following therapy should also be used to remove obesity.

  • Consumption of dry and hot liquids.
  • Consumption of buttermilk.
  • Eating barley bread with vegetables and light digestible vegetables like gourd etc.
  • Add one teaspoon of honey to lukewarm water and consume it in the morning and evening.
  • Consume food items containing Vata quality and green vegetables and fruits.
  • Prepare a decoction of Giloy, Nagamotha, Harida, Baheda and Amla and consume it in the morning in the quantity of 50-100 ml.
  • Take 500 grams each of wheat, rice, millet and whole green gram and roast them on low flame to make porridge. Add 20 grams of carom seeds and 50 grams of white sesame seeds to it. Adding 50 grams of porridge to 400 ml of water and consuming it regularly helps in obesity.
  • Every morning and evening, crush one Ashwagandha leaf with hands, make a tablet and consume it with warm water one hour before meals or on an empty stomach. Do this experiment for seven days, after that after a gap of 15 days you can use it again for seven days.
  • Soak one spoon of Triphala powder (haritaki, baheda, amla) in 200 ml water. Heat it in the morning and when half of it remains, filter it and drink it.
Obesity is cured by all these means. Apart from obesity, other diseases like heart disease, tuberculosis, cough, leprosy, diabetes, common diseases etc. are also cured by these. In the modern era, due to more material facilities and lack of physical activity, the disease of obesity can be seen increasing. And the diseases caused by it are also increasing. The above measures help in preventing obesity

Thinning – Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

In the body of an extremely thin (weak) person, the buttocks, stomach and neck are very dry (thin). A network of arteries is visible on his skin. The joints of his bones are always clearly visible. Such a person appears to be a skeleton of bones and skin. A very thin person does not have enough strength to endure excessive physical labour, large amounts of food, hunger, thirst, disease, pain and the effects of medicines. He cannot tolerate extreme cold or extreme heat, and cannot have proper sexual intercourse. This type of weak person mostly suffers from diseases of spleen, cough, shortness of breath, tumour, piles and diseases of stomach, chest and intestine.

Understanding Thinness: Common Causes and Influencing Factors

The main causes of being thin are – dry food, fasting, eating in less quantity, grief, worry, anger, suppressing natural urges, sleeping less, bathing more, excessive use of corrective therapy like vomiting, purgation etc., application of dry substances, old age, hereditary influences and being sick most of the time.

Treatment of Thinness

Consumption of milk, ghee, cheese, butter and honey, bath, application of oily substances, more sleep, enema with oily medicines, staying away from worries and thinness are eliminated. Living life happily – all these come under Brihan Chikitsa. The body is strengthened by their use.
  • Good sleep, happiness, comfortable bed, contentment and peace of mind.
  • Staying away from worry, sex and physical labour means not doing them too much.
  • Seeing pleasant scenes and relatives, meeting and talking to them.
  • Consumption of products made from curd, ghee, milk, sugarcane, shali rice, urad, wheat and jaggery.
  • Regular oil massage, application of oily substances and bath in warm water.
  • Wearing soft and delicate clothes. Using natural perfumes and garlands.
  • Rasayana therapy and intake of Vrishya (sperm increasing) medicines.
  • Remain free from all kinds of worries and consume nutritious food at the right time.
  • Doing regular asanas and pranayama. Consuming pure air by taking morning walk.
  • Consume small and easily digestible food and add a spoonful of honey to cold milk containing sugar candy and consume it every morning and evening.
  • One should take porridge by mixing protein rich substances like soybean, wheat, barley, gram, etc. or consume a balanced diet. With all these measures, we can get rid of excessive emaciation and the diseases caused by it. In short, extreme emaciation can be cured by not worrying, staying happy, sleeping more and regularly consuming food and medicine having growth-promoting properties.

Obesity is more harmful than Thinness

As mentioned, both conditions – being overweight and being thin – are harmful. Because both types of people are suffering from some disease or the other and both need equal treatment, but the condition of obesity is comparatively worse among the two. Therefore, when an obese person falls sick, he suffers more and the treatment of an obese person is also more difficult than that of a thin person because for such a person, the treatment should be such that it reduces the increased fat, digestive fire and Vata. If Brihan type of treatment is done for this then digestive fire and wind get calmed, but the fat increases. If weakening treatment is done then fat decreases but digestive fire and wind increase. In other words- by doing Brihan Chikitsa, obesity increases more in a person and by doing Langhan Chikitsa, due to the strong digestive power, he is not able to tolerate it. Hence, treating obesity is more difficult and complicated task than thinness.
